Flooded basements bring about a number of problems to every household. This is a big domestic concern that is causing not only widespread property damage but also sleepless nights to affected homemakers. But before taking steps to cure flooded basements, it is imperative to first determine its causes. One need not look very far in order to find these causes. It is a fact that a flooded basement is produced not only by human acts but also by natural phenomena.

The environment can play a large role in triggering the existence of a flooded basement. Strong, severe and excessive rainfall and heavy storms can cause flooding in the areas surrounding the house. The water from these areas may flow into the walls of the house and seep into the perimeter of the basement. This often causes the common leakages we find in the ceiling, walls and floors of our basements. When the flow of water from excessive rainfall can no longer be controlled due to poor landscaping, it is usually the basement that suffers the brunt of this environmental mishap.

This flooding that is caused by rainfall also exposes another problem which is that of malfunctioning sewage systems. There may be several reasons why the flow of water from rainfall cannot be contained by the soil and by the sewage systems. Drainage blocks may exist and may be left undetected for a long period of time. Leaves, garbage and plants may be the root causes of drainage blocks. These prevent the water from flowing freely into the sewages, thus causing flooding in the surrounding areas of the house.

Human beings may stand helpless when faced with the ferocity of natural calamities. Oftentimes, it is these unstoppable rains and storms that bring about the problem of a flooded basement. This does not mean, however, that homeowners cannot take steps to remedy the damage caused by a flooded basement. One step that a community must take in order to survive a flooded basement is to establish a proper system of neighborhood flood management. This may take a lot of time and effort but the benefits are long-term and are worth it, considering the massive destruction of property that may take place.

Community action may be initiated by implementing rules for every resident. This includes conducting a routine checkup of all drainage systems in the area. Every homeowner should be made responsible for removing any drainage block that may be present in the sewages near his or her house. Homeowners should also be encouraged to keep their front lawns and backyards clean and free of leaves and garbage that may block the drainage systems.

However, when destructive storms take place and flooding is inevitable, homeowners should also be provided with information on how to reduce the damaging effects of a flooded basement. This will greatly help in preventing some harmful consequences such as water contamination, electric shock and property damage. The cooperation of the whole community is necessary. This is the key to rein in the damages caused by basement flooding when the latter is no longer a product of human lapses but rather is unavoidably caused by the environment.
